Today is the puppy’s first full day in the world (yesterday being day zero). Joy had her pups before we expected her to, under a deck. This was the best spot she could think of, but her pups kept rolling down the hill and she was very anxious. So we built a outdoor puppy house - on a shaded place on earth. It’s set up against a building near the deck, so Joy can crawl under on her own and keep cool and keep watch. The puppy house sides are made of a modified welded wire exercise pen, with burlap tied to all sides for shade, and a pickup truck bed cover as a roof. We can fit in there with Joy and the pups - it’s very roomy. We put hay on the ground and will add wood shavings.

Joy is now letting me near the puppies, though she is a bit wary.

For his first Father’s day, papa dog Teddy is not allowed near the pups! He’s been guarding the fort and getting used to his new duties as primary Livestock Guardian.
